About Scottdale
|
From the moment you enter Miss Martha’s Tea Room &
Gifts, you realize that this charming shop is a place you will return to
again and again. |
|
At the heart of the shop is a cozy dining area replete with a 1910 baby
grand piano, pieces of salvaged Victorian architecture and other classic
and antique accoutrements.
Miss Martha’s Tea Room is located in historic downtown Scottdale, PA, in
the building which once housed the old Porter & Stoner Dry Goods and
Grocery Store. Its history stretches back to 1899, and Porter & Stoner
served the community for more than three decades. In the mid 1930s,
Cecil Echard remodeled the building and operated a restaurant for the
next thirty years. Eck’s Restaurant occupied the building until 1961.
After a few years of vacancy, Provident Bookstore operated a religious
bookstore in the building from 1964 into the new century. Today this
venerable old building has a new look and a bright new future as the
home of Miss Martha’s Tea Room & Gifts.

Miss Martha’s Tea Room & Gifts is the fulfilled dream
of owner Marty Savanick, who has always loved antiques, collectibles,
and making people happy. Her first entrepreneurial venture came in 1989
with opening of Collections by Marty in Scottdale. Following this
success, Marty opened a second, larger store along Route 31 in Donegal,
one well positioned to take advantage of tourist traffic through the
Laurel Highlands and to Seven Springs. But as her businesses grew, Marty
always harbored the dream of opening a Tea Room, at first thinking the
new enterprise could be a part of Collections by Marty. But when the old
Provident Book Store in Scottdale became available, Marty knew the time
for her Tea Room had come at last. Today, the entire family is involved
in running Marty’s ventures, including sons
Benjamin, Nathan, and Adam.
|
 |
Marty is far from having run out of ideas. Seven
dining rooms are being restored on the second floor, perfect for Bridge
clubs, Christmas parties, and small, elegant get-togethers. Etiquette
classes for young girls and other informational and entertainment events
are being planned.
Miss Martha’s Tea Room & Gifts, in its wonderful, 125
year old building, is a fun treat that should not be missed. So stop by,
or plan to reserve your group for a special teatime event; you will not
be disappointed. Store hours are Monday through Saturday 9:30 am to 4:00
pm. Lunch is served from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. |

About Scottdale
Scottdale is located in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
northeast of Uniontown along Highway 119 near the Yough River (Youghiogheny River). About
45 miles south of Pittsburgh, Scottdale encompasses a land area of 3.006
square kilometers and has a population of over 5,000.
The quaint downtown setting offers a theater, family and fine dining, specialty
shops, and antiques. The local area offers golf, bed and
breakfasts, and the West Overton Museum. The West Overton Museum is a
pre-Civil War era village and the birthplace of Henry Clay Frick.
Scottdale is just a short drive from Pittsburgh and many
attractions throughout the Laurel Highlands including, major bike trails,
Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, Fort
Necessity Battlefield, Kennywood Amusement Park, Idlewild Park, and Ohio
Pyle State Park.
Scottdale received its name in honor of Colonel Thomas A. Scott, who served
as assistant secretary of war during the Civil War and later became
president of the Pennsylvania Railroad when it opened its Scottdale branch
in the year 1873. At the time, the town was known as Fountain Mills.
The borough of Scottdale incorporated on Feb. 5, 1874. Both the railroad and
the coal and coke industry played a prominent role in the prosperity and
development of this beautiful community. For a time, Scottdale enjoyed the
position of being an industrial and financial center, one of the wealthiest
cities in Westmoreland County.
Today, the West Overton Museums preserve much of the rich heritage of
Scottdale’s 19th century past, and offer displays that reflect life in a
rural-industrial village. The West Overton Museum complex includes the 1838
Abraham Overholt Homestead, the Springhouse, and the birthplace of
industrialist Henry Clay Frick. Also on site is the 1859 Old Farm distillery
and gristmill.
